HBL Analysis: Diamante by Jacob Jensen

Monday 29 November 2010

Danish design brand Jacob Jensen has produced a collection for Tommerup Kister, one of Denmark's biggest funeral directors. Inspired by gem-cutting, the range is made up of three coffins and an urn.

Drawing on the smooth finish and geometric angles of polished gemstones, the three coffins use 14, 26 and 32 facets in their designs respectively. The urn has a diamond-inspired form and is lowered into the ground using a pulley system made up of ribbons.

Each piece is made of Nordic birch plywood and is available in black or white with a matt or high-shine finish: read more about the current monochrome and super-matt finish trends here on WGSN-homebuildlife.

Moving on from the traditional coffin aesthetic of polished wood and brass handles, the aesthetic also marks a move away from culturally or religiously specific connotations, as the design team conducted research into funerary traditions and ceremonies worldwide before developing their ideas.

The collaboration marks the 100th anniversary of Tommerup Kister and also the 50th anniversary of Jacob Jensen as a brand.
